Where Tank Started
Tank is a French Bulldog, and he was six months old when his family signed him up. He was, in his owner’s words, super hyper. He knew basically no commands. He had little to no crate or house training. And his owner had never trained a dog before, so every one of those problems felt bigger than it was.
The hardest part was not the behavior. It was the guilt. She felt bad about putting Tank in a crate at all, which is one of the most common feelings we hear from new dog owners in Amarillo, and one of the easiest to work through once you see a crate used well.
The Training Journey
Tank went through our two-week board and train with Logan, one of our professional trainers. He lived with her for the length of the program, which is what makes this kind of training work: the reps happen all day, every day, in real situations, instead of once a week for an hour.
What his owner talks about most is the communication. Logan sent pictures and videos every single day. When she noticed anything about Tank’s health, she let his owner know right away rather than waiting. And she gave advice along the way, so the family was learning at the same time Tank was.
Tank’s Wins
When his owner picked him up, she could see the difference immediately, and see how much he had learned. He had also gained a little weight, which told her he had been fed, watched and looked after the whole time she was worrying about him.
The clearest measure of a good outcome is what a family plans to do next. Tank’s owner intends to keep training with Logan through Basic and Advanced Obedience, and is considering the four-week program later on. Nobody books a second program after training that did not work.
What It Changed for His Family
A first-time owner who described herself as knowing nothing about training now has a dog who understands what is being asked of him, and a trainer she trusts enough to keep working with. The crate stopped being something to feel guilty about. Tank stopped being a puzzle.
Why Tank’s Story Matters
Plenty of people in Amarillo are living with a hyper young dog and quietly assuming they are the problem. They usually are not. A dog who has never been taught anything is not badly behaved, he is untrained, and those are two very different situations. Tank is a good reminder of how quickly the second one can change.
